Floods blessing in disguise

The floods during the monsoon season in 2010 affected people in all the four province of pakistan. Thousand of people lost their family members relatives or friends.Thousand in fact hundreds of thousand became homeless. Huge areas of land were flooded and the crops were destroyed. people lost cattle chicken and other sources of income.But people had faith in allah.They did not give up hope.Soon things started to change for the better for maby of them. The floods were a blessing in disguise for shakeela Mai. She was a widow and a mother of three children. Before the floods she worked as a maid in people is houses to feed her children.During the worst floods in Pakistan is history shakeela lost her house and her job.Then one of the non-governmental orgnisations Started work for the flood affected people gave her 60 hens with feed for three months. By the time the water receded the hens were big enough to lay eggs.Shakeela sold the egges then she bought more feed and also more hens. She now owns small poultry farm and arounds each month. Shakeela has become an inspiration for the men and women in her area. Shakeela is not alone in her success.There are others also who did not give up when faced with the disaster.They kept up their hopes and fought for a better life even when everythings was lost. One such person was Raja Shakeel Ahmad Several acres of his agriculture land were lying barren because of salinity Before the floods.However when the floods came they brought fertile soil to his land.In the season after the floods this land produced 1960 kilogramnes of wheat per acre. According to Raja Shakeel Ahmad 'The crop was so thick that even a snake coulf not find place to go in. According to another farmer Younis khan an area of around 15 kilometres of infertile land in his region could now be cultivated. Moreover in areas where the wheat production per acre before the floids was around 2300 kilogrammes (kgs) It increased to 2600 kgs per acre after the floods. Floodwater lakes also provide livelihood to people. For example one of the lakes that was naturally formed by the floods in one of the affected areas had plenty of fishes. One of the persons living in this area jamshed said that he could easily catch up to 15kilogramnes of fish from that lake and sell it in the market. He said that for him the lake had proved to be a blessing.In fact the number of such fisheries increased by about thirty percent after the floods!
